CHRI’s 20th Anniversary Conference

On the 14th September 2007 CHRI celebrated 20 years of existence by holding a conference at the Royal Commonwealth Society, London. The theme of the conference was “Human Rights for Human Wrongs: The Continuing Commonwealth Challenge.” The event was designed to:

  1. Showcase the work of CHRI over the past twenty years
  2. Focus attention on the shortcomings within the Commonwealth in terms of Human Rights observance
  3. Raise the profile of the work of the three CHRI offices

The conference was held in association with the Royal Commonwealth Society and was supported by the Joffe Charitable Trust, the Round Table (Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs) and the Commonwealth Foundation. The Conference was opened by the Commonwealth Secretary General and the Keynote Speaker was the distinguished human rights and civil liberties advocate, Sir Geoffrey Bindman, who spoke on the necessity of building human rights into government initiatives to counter terrorism.
