CHRI’s 20th Anniversary Conference
On the 14th September 2007 CHRI celebrated 20 years of existence
by holding a conference at the Royal Commonwealth Society, London.
The theme of the conference was “Human
Rights for Human Wrongs: The Continuing Commonwealth Challenge.”
The event was designed to:
- Showcase
the work of CHRI over the past twenty years
-
Focus attention on the shortcomings within the Commonwealth
in terms of Human Rights observance
-
Raise the profile of the work of the three CHRI offices
The
conference was held in association with the Royal Commonwealth
Society and was supported by the Joffe Charitable Trust, the Round
Table (Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs) and the
Commonwealth Foundation. The Conference was opened by the Commonwealth
Secretary General and the Keynote Speaker was the distinguished
human rights and civil liberties advocate, Sir Geoffrey Bindman,
who spoke on the necessity of building human rights into government
initiatives to counter terrorism.
