This booklet serves as a comprehensive guide to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, along with the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995, as amended in 2015. It explains the purpose of this special law, offences defined as atrocities, their punishments, procedure for registration, investigation and trial of cases, special safeguards, rights of victims and witnesses, roles of different state officials, and details of relief and rehabilitation measures. It emphasises the role of the police as the first point of contact within the criminal justice system and highlights steps that can be taken to hold the police to account for any negligence and/or misconduct.
