Project Associate for City Core Group (CCG), Mumbai


Are you a Mumbai-based young professional with energy and drive who is committed to human rights and access to justice? Then CHRI has a challenging position for you in a fascinating project that aims to bring change at the ground level. 

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (www.humanrightsinitiative.org) is looking for a Project Associate who can work with us to strengthen the City Core Group (CCG), a Mumbai-based civil society network with over 40 members that works to facilitate improved police response to women safety and gender-based violence in the city. The work will involve:

  • Coordinating with CCG members on a regular basis to hold monthly meetings, facilitate information exchange on cases of violence against women being handled by different members, and maintaining detailed record of the assistance provided in each case by the concerned member;
  • Researching and preparing briefs on police measures and initiatives on women's safety in the city;
  • Assisting in preparing a report, in consultation with the CCG members and under guidance from CHRI's Police Reforms Programme Head, on police response in select cases of violence against women to highlight the barriers to accessing justice for survivors;
  • Assisting CCG members to provide proper guidance to women survivors and victims of crime in seeking legal and other institutional remedies as required;
  • Engaging with different state authorities including the city police, state police, legal services authorities, women and child welfare departments and independent commissions through written submissions, letters and meetings to push for systemic solutions and/or better implementation of initiatives;
  • Assisting with the organisation of public awareness sessions with local communities in target localities to deepen legal awareness about policing and citizen’s rights, especially women's rights.

The Project Associate will work in close consultation with our Project Lead who is based in Mumbai and implement project activities in Mumbai. 

Essential Qualifications 

The candidate should be a good researcher, networker, advocate and team player. The candidate must be able to keep up with developments on policing in the city, research contemporary trends, write and present well and be conversant with process documentation.

Candidates should have:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in law, social sciences, or related fields;
  • 3-5 years’ experience of working on issues relating to the criminal justice system
  • Good working knowledge of Indian criminal law and procedure, particularly in relation to crimes against women;
  • Excellent drafting, writing and communications skills, including public speaking and coordination skills. 
  • Outstanding computer skills. 
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Marathi (essential)
  • Fluency in Hindi (desirable)
  • Knowledge of the working of police stations (desirable)

Location, Duration and Remuneration

The position is located in Mumbai. The duration of the contract is from 1 March 2023 – 30 September 2024. Remuneration will be commensurate with knowledge and experience levels and will be in the range of Rs. 35,000 – Rs. 42,000 per month.
