In May 2005, the national Right to Information Act 2005 was passed by Parliament. The RTI Act 2005 received Presidential assent on 15 June and came fully into force on 12 October 2005. The RTI Act 2005 covers all Central, State and local government bodies and applies to the State Government of Tripura.

The General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department, Government of Tripura notified a new set of rules in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 27 of the Right to Information Act, 2005. The Tripura Right to Information Rules, 2008 was published in the official gazette on 4 February 2008 and came into force from that date. An unofficial Bengali translation of Tripura RTI Rules 2008 has been prepared by CHRI.

The Tripura Government has started implementing the RTI Act 2005. The Government has issued the Tripura Right to Information Rules, 2005.

Newsupdates, Activities & Advocacy

  • Former Higher Education Secretary, Mr B K Chakraborty and former Legislative Assembly Secretary D K Das Chowdhury have been sworn in as the Chief Information Commissioner and State Information Commissioner of Tripura respectively.
  • The Opposition Congress has criticised the Left Front government for allegedly handling the implementation of the RTI Act 2005 in a partisan manner. Opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath said the State Government by appointing a State Chief Information Commissioner and a State Information Commissioner, both with allegiance to the ruling CPI(M) party, had violated provisions of the new Act.
  • The Tripura Government invited CHRI to conduct a one-day workshop for Government officials in Agartala on 8 September. The workshop was attended by the Chief Secretary, several Principal Secretaries and between 80-90 officials. This workshop has led to the formulation of a time bound Action Plan for implementation.
