The youngest convict in the December 16, 2012 gang-rape of a physiotherapy student is all set to walk free on Sunday – the Delhi High Court has ruled that his three-year detention at an observation home would not be extended. On the third anniversary of the Nirbhaya gangrape incident, it seems not much has changed in the nation's capital. As many as 2,043 cases of rape were reported in 2014, which included 154 gang-rapes and 687 rapes of minors, and 2,667 cases of assault with intent to outrage a woman's modesty and only 1 in 13 cases of sexual harassment reported -- all in Delhi between January and December 2014. 

Just 35 complaints received in 2014 against Delhi Police personnel transformed into FIRs out of the total of 12,872, with chargesheet being filed against nine of them so far, a report on Delhi law & order revealed. 

Women’s groups mark the anniversary of the infamous Delhi gangrape that shook the country.

As India remembers the December 16 brave heart on Wednesday, the situation across the national capital seems to have remained unchanged. Even after three years of the brutal incident that shook the entire country as well as the world, south district where the incident was reported is still one of the most unsafe areas for women in the national capital.

16 December marks the completion of three years since a 23-year old paramedical student was gangraped in the Capital. The brutal nature of the crime had shocked the conscience of the entire nation and she was named Nirbhaya to honour her brave resistance. 

Despite a marked requirement of greater number of women in Delhi Police in the wake of the increasing crimes against women in Delhi, less than 10% women make up the total number of Delhi Police personnel.

According to Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), among the existing number of women in the police force, the number of women in higher ranks are even less.

Most cases of heinous crimes were reported from outer Delhi in 2014 while it came a close second, after south, on rape and molestation, according to a crime-mapping study released by a human rights NGO on Tuesday.
